The video above takes you on a walkthrough of 7A Ranch and Resort in Wimberley, Texas — a unique property in the Hill Country that combines family vacation cabins, river access, live music, and a quirky replica of an 1880s western town. Located about 40 miles southwest of Austin and 60 miles northeast of San Antonio, 7A Ranch has been hosting families for over 70 years, and there's a lot more going on here than you might expect from a ranch resort.

What Is Pioneer Town at 7A Ranch?

Pioneer Town is a reconstructed old western town built in the 1950s as part of the original 7A Ranch, which was founded in 1946. The construction was apparently inspired by an idea from Walt Disney himself, designed to transport visitors back to the Texas frontier era. Walking through it, you'll find replica storefronts including a feed and grain store, barber shop, sheriff's office, pioneer chapel, boarding house, saloon, and jail. One of the standout features is a bottle house — said to be the only soft drink bottle house in the US. In old western towns, it was common to build houses from saloon bottles as a way to showcase how much the town could drink. There's also a log cabin from 1850 that was recovered from the bottom of Canyon Lake after the lake's creation in the 1960s drowned the original site. Many of Pioneer Town's buildings were destroyed in the devastating 2015 flood, but the property has survived under new ownership since 2016. They also have a cowboy museum and reportedly recreate gunfights during certain times of the season.

Live Music and Things to Do at 7A Ranch

The property has a few spots where you can catch live music and enjoy the surroundings:

  • The Opera House — A performance venue inside Pioneer Town where talented Texas artists, many based out of Austin, play on a big stage while people stand, watch, and dance.
  • The Cantina — Located near the pool and overlooking the Blanco River, this is a more laid-back spot for live music. David Bridwell played a set here during his visit, performing for folks hanging out poolside.
  • The Ice Cream Shop — A fully functioning shop inside Pioneer Town where you can grab a cone while exploring the old western storefronts.

Beyond the ranch itself, the property sits right along the Blanco River, with a half-mile stretch of cabins that have AC, kitchens, and porches overlooking the water. There are also larger lodges set up for family reunions and retreats, with shared kitchens and meeting areas. And the nearby town of Wimberley is worth the trip on its own — good walking, dining, live music, shopping, and art galleries all within a short drive of 7A Ranch.

Is 7A Ranch Worth Visiting?

If you're looking for something a little different in the Hill Country — somewhere that mixes old Texas history, river time, and live music — 7A Ranch is a solid pick. It's not trying to be slick or modern. Pioneer Town is genuinely weird in the best way, and catching a show at the opera house or a set out by the cantina makes for a memorable Hill Country day trip or weekend stay.
