Congress Street in Downtown Austin: A Walking Tour of Music, Shops & City Life

Published: November 6, 2023350 viewsAustin

The video above walks you through Congress Street — more precisely, Congress Avenue — in the heart of downtown Austin, covering the stretch north of Lady Bird Lake all the way up toward the Texas State Capitol. It's a wide, six-lane avenue that cuts right through the middle of the city and serves as one of the main connectors between North Austin and South Austin. Along the way, you get a look at the tall buildings that make up the Austin skyline, the casual foot traffic of joggers and walkers, and a solid mix of restaurants, shops, and live music spots that line both sides of the street.

What Live Music Venues Are on Congress Avenue in Austin?

If you're walking Congress Avenue looking for live music, there are a handful of spots worth knowing about in the stretch north of the river:

  • Speakeasy — A longtime Austin venue with a big stage, known for hosting rock and indie acts in a classic bar setting
  • Elephant Room — A below-street-level jazz club that's one of the best spots in town for live jazz, with shows most nights of the week
  • Ellis / The Fairground — A venue inside a food hall concept that hosts live music events, sometimes advertised under The Fairground name
  • Cooper's Barbecue — A well-known BBQ spot on Congress that used to have live music but had stopped hosting it at the time of filming
  • Wero Taco Bar — A casual taco and margarita spot that books live music multiple times a day, making it an easy place to catch a set while you eat and drink

David Bridwell was invited on stage at Wero Taco Bar by Sharita Perez, a performer in the rockabilly scene. She talked about connecting with the local two-stepping community — groups that meet up to two-step at different venues around Austin — and her genuine enthusiasm for the music and people around her was obvious.

From Downtown to South Congress

The video also crosses south over the Congress Avenue Bridge, where you can look out over Lady Bird Lake and spot kayakers on the water. That walk takes you into South Congress, or SoCo, where the Continental Club sits as one of Austin's most iconic live music venues. The night featured a show by Jonathan Richmond, and the line to get in stretched down the sidewalk. While waiting, there's solid window shopping right next door — places like Goorin Bros Hat Shop, Warby Parker, and Aviator Nation, which actually has a small stage visible from the street.

A Good Starting Point for Exploring Austin's Music Scene

Congress Avenue works well as a walking route if you want to get a feel for downtown Austin without committing to any single neighborhood. You can start near 6th Street — where Congress splits the Dirty Sixth and West Sixth areas — grab coffee or a quick bite, duck into a jazz set at Elephant Room, then keep walking south across the bridge into SoCo for a show at the Continental Club. It's all connected and more walkable than most people expect. And if your legs give out, there are scooters everywhere or you can grab a rideshare back.
