Live Music in Texas

A tour of the San Antonio River Walk (places to visit in Texas)

The video above is a walking tour of the San Antonio River Walk, one of the most visited attractions in all of Texas. With an estimated 10 million visitors per year and a main stretch packed with restaurants, bars, hotels, and river cruise boats, the San Antonio River Walk really does function as its own entertainment district. The footage covers the central, high-density section along the river — the walkways, bridges, and all the twists and turns that give the area a feel that's almost like being in a different country, with Spanish, European, and New Orleans-inspired architecture lining the water.

History of the San Antonio River Walk

The River Walk almost didn't happen. Back in the 1920s, a devastating flood killed around 50 people, and rather than paving over the river with concrete, city planners decided to use it as a central part of water management. The next major turning point came in 1968 when San Antonio hosted the World's Fair, which drove the construction of restaurants, hotels, and infrastructure that transformed the riverfront into the destination it is today. The river has been a critical thread in the development of the entire city.

What Live Music Venues Are on the San Antonio River Walk?

If you're looking for live music along the River Walk, there are several spots worth checking out. Here's what turned up during this visit:

  • Little Rhein Prost Haus — A Texas-styled spot with a hint of German flavor, featuring a patio right on the River Walk
  • Crockett Tavern — Calls itself downtown's only country and western themed bar, with live music multiple nights a week, built from the ruins near the Alamo's last stand on the Camino Real Trail
  • Dirty Nelly's Irish Pub — An Irish pub offering piano entertainment along the river
  • On the Bend Oyster Bar — A seafood spot with live music, situated along one of the more scenic curves of the River Walk
  • Mad Dogs British Pub — A British-style pub that books live entertainment seven nights a week
  • Elsewhere Garden Bar & Kitchen — Located less than a mile from the main River Walk section but still along the trail, with a large outdoor patio and regular live music

Playing Music at Elsewhere Garden Bar & Kitchen

David Bridwell made the drive down to San Antonio to play a gig at Elsewhere Garden Bar & Kitchen, which sits just off the main River Walk trail. The venue has a big outdoor patio setup that makes it a solid spot for live music on a Texas evening. The set included original music, and the crowd was into it — a good night all around. Elsewhere is a little removed from the tourist-heavy core of the River Walk, which honestly works in its favor if you're looking for something that feels a bit more local and less like a chain restaurant strip.
