Third Ward, Houston: Murals, Turkey Leg Hut & Exploring Houston's African-American History

Published: September 23, 2022697 viewsHouston

The video above takes you on a real drive through Third Ward Houston, one of the city's most historically significant neighborhoods. Located southeast of downtown, Third Ward is a center for Houston's African-American community with deep roots that show up everywhere — in the murals painted across buildings, in the museums, and in the food. This footage was captured while David Bridwell was in Houston for a gig, and the detour through Third Ward turned into one of those stops that deserves its own spotlight.

What Is There to See and Do in Third Ward Houston?

Third Ward is the kind of neighborhood where you can spend a few hours just walking around and taking it all in. The murals alone are worth the trip — the Station Museum of Contemporary Art has several painted on the outside of the building, including a Third Ward Monopoly mural and one called "Enjoy the Collapse." You don't even need to go inside to get something out of it, though the interior exhibits look worth a return visit. A little further up the road, more murals pop up near the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, which focuses on African-American military history. The whole area has this layered quality where art, history, and everyday life sit right next to each other.

Then there's the food. Turkey Leg Hut is the spot multiple people will tell you to visit, and they're right. The owners started out selling turkey legs in the parking lot at the Houston rodeo back in 2016, and the demand just kept growing. The stuffed turkey leg is the move — packed with spices, meat falling off the bone, and the place stays packed for a reason.

Live Music and Hangout Spots Near Third Ward

There are a few solid spots in and around the Third Ward area worth checking out:

  • Axelrad Beer Garden — A laid-back spot with a big outdoor space, food trucks, DJs, projected visuals, and regular open mic nights hosted upstairs
  • Retrospect Coffee Bar — A coffee spot tucked right behind Axelrad, good for slowing down between stops
  • Stats Sports Bar — A sports-focused bar further out from Third Ward where David Bridwell performed a live set on the patio; expect a crowd that's into Houston Rockets, Astros, and (reluctantly) Texans talk

Houston Feels Like a Mix of LA and Atlanta

One thing that comes through spending time in Houston is the city's personality. It's the fourth-largest city in the country, and it feels sprawled out like Los Angeles with a similar level of diversity. But there's also an Atlanta-like Southern energy — you can sense it in the landscape, the concrete, even the occasional alligator story. Houston is a working-class city where people aren't putting on airs. Folks are grounded, direct, and there's this underlying drive you pick up on just navigating the freeways. That mix of cultures getting along without a lot of pretense is part of what makes neighborhoods like Third Ward feel so real.
