A driving tour of Westheimer Road in Houston, Texas

The video above takes you on a full driving tour of Westheimer Road in Houston, one of the longest and most culturally layered streets in the city. Stretching roughly 19 miles from Bagby Street near Midtown all the way past Beltway 8, Westheimer Road in Houston cuts through wildly different neighborhoods — Montrose, River Oaks, the Galleria area, and beyond — each with its own personality, food scene, and nightlife. David Bridwell filmed this while in town playing music at Betsy's at Evelyn's Park, and the drive captures everything from iconic live music clubs to palatial residential streets to wide, fast-moving suburban stretches lined with strip malls and restaurants.

What Live Music Venues Are on Westheimer Road in Houston?

Westheimer is loaded with spots to catch live music, especially in the Montrose section near the eastern end of the road. Here are the venues highlighted in the video:

  • Numbers Nightclub — A Houston institution dating back to 1978, known for its eclectic crowd and history of hosting up-and-coming bands like Nine Inch Nails and Red Hot Chili Peppers. They run popular DJ nights and remain a major cultural gathering spot.
  • Avant Garden — Set inside a historic old house in Montrose, this spot has a social patio, bar, and lounge with a rotating lineup that includes jazz, open mic nights, burlesque, comedy, magic, and poetry on their outdoor stage.
  • Fiora's Bottle Shop — A more upscale spot tucked inside the Montrose Collective mixed-use development, with occasional live music in a polished setting surrounded by boutique restaurants and shops.
  • Montrose Live — A weekend market setup with vendors, food trucks, and live music right along Westheimer in the heart of Montrose.
  • Catbird's — A neighborhood bar since 1995, low-lit and unassuming with cocktails and occasional live music. A real locals' hangout.
  • The Lock Bar — Located in the River Oaks District, this raw bar with craft cocktails had live music from Christopher LR Goodwin during the visit. A solid stop if you're already in the area shopping or eating.

Neighborhoods Along the Drive

The tour starts at the eastern edge of Westheimer at Bagby Street, right where Midtown meets Montrose. Montrose is where most of the interesting nightlife, vintage shops, coffee spots like Agora, and flea-market-style stores are clustered. Moving west, the road passes through River Oaks — a wealthy residential area with palatial estates, palm-tree-lined streets, boutique shopping, and art galleries. Then you hit the Galleria area around the Post Oak intersection, which features those iconic 40-foot ring sculptures that double as street signs and urban landmarks. That Post Oak and Westheimer intersection has even served as an unofficial town square for political gatherings over the years.

What It's Like Driving the Full Length of Westheimer

Past the Galleria, Westheimer widens to four lanes in each direction and the character shifts. The sidewalks get rougher, the speed picks up, and the four-mile stretch from 610 out to Fondren Road is noted as one of the most dangerous sections for car accidents and pedestrian safety in Houston. The road is simply so wide that crossing an intersection on foot takes real effort. But even out here, people live their lives along Westheimer — they have their favorite restaurants, their churches, the spot where they took family photos. That's what makes this street interesting. It's not one thing. It's the full range of what Houston actually is, condensed into a single 19-mile road.
